The Best Honey Mustard Wings, Explained
- Baked, not fried. This recipe eliminates the hassle and mess of deep-frying. I’ll show you how easy it is to bake chicken wings that are just as crispy outside, tender inside, and full of flavor.
- Homemade honey mustard sauce. This might be my favorite dipping sauce ever. It’s sweet and sticky with a mild heat from the mustard. It’s not spicy, so everyone can eat and enjoy these wings at your next party.
- Perfect for a crowd. I make these wings for Football Sunday gatherings, potlucks, and when we entertain, and they never disappoint.

Ingredients You’ll Need
Here’s a short shopping list with notes on what you’ll need to make these honey mustard wings. Scroll to the recipe card below for the exact measurements and step-by-step recipe instructions.
- Chicken Wings – I like to use a mix of drumettes and wings.
- Seasonings – Sweet or smoked paprika, garlic powder, chipotle chili powder, and cinnamon for the spice rub.
- Canola Oil – We won’t fry these chicken wings in oil, however, a light coating helps the spice rub adhere and lets the wings crisp up in the oven.
- Optional Garnishes – Green onions or sesame seeds for serving.
Homemade Honey Mustard Sauce
- Honey – Maple syrup would also be delicious with this recipe. You could also use brown sugar.
- Dijon Mustard – I like to use stone ground Dijon mustard for the texture. Feel free to use any kind you prefer, such as yellow mustard or hot brown mustard.
- Ground Mustard – Mustard powder helps boost the flavor.
- Butter – Makes the sauce a little creamy and helps it smooth out the tangy flavor.
How to Make Honey Mustard Chicken Wings
Here’s how to make the best baked chicken wings, and then slather them with tangy honey mustard! This oven method is super simple, with a fraction of the oil than deep frying. No splatters here!

- First, you’ll want to preheat the oven and prep the chicken wings. Preheat the oven to 400ºF. A hot oven is key here! That’s how the chicken gets nice and crispy. Meanwhile, pat the chicken dry. This aids in getting the chicken wings perfectly golden brown.

- Next, make the seasoning. Simply combine the dry seasoning ingredients in a bowl. Then, sprinkle them over the chicken wings and toss them to coat.

- Bake the chicken wings. Lay the wings flat on a wire rack and then bake them for about 20 minutes.
- Flip the wings halfway through. Don’t forget to flip the wings over! Afterward, bake them for another 20 minutes.
Make the Honey Mustard Wing Sauce
While the chicken wings bake in the oven, you’ll have plenty of time to whip up the easy homemade honey mustard on the stovetop.

- While the wings are baking, make the sauce. To make the honey mustard sauce, combine all of the ingredients in a saucepan. Then stir until the butter melts and the sauce becomes warm.

- Next, toss the chicken wings with the honey mustard sauce. Use a large bowl to coat the wings with the sauce. Serve them immediately with green onions and sesame seeds if you’d like!

Tips for the Best Baked Wings
- Always pat the wings dry. The drier the chicken, the crispier it will be.
- Bake on a wire rack. Bake the chicken wings on a wire rack set over a baking sheet. This allows the hot air to circulate around the chicken and crisp up the outside. Remember to flip the chicken halfway through baking to ensure it sears on all sides.
- Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet. Air needs to be able to move around the chicken wings, so you shouldn’t overlap them on the baking sheet. Overcrowding causes the wings to steam instead of sear.
- Preheat the oven. You want to put the chicken wings into a hot oven to ensure the skin gets nice and crispy right off the bat.

What to Serve With Honey Mustard Wings
I love adding these honey mustard chicken wings to a game day charcuterie board alongside snacks like bacon-wrapped jalapeños, jumbo pretzels, crudités, chips, and dips, like queso. Wash down the meal with a cold beer or a refreshing salty dog cocktail.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers
- Refrigerate leftovers. These baked honey mustard wings are best eaten fresh, right out of the oven. However, you can keep any leftover wings in the fridge in an airtight container for about 4 days.
- Reheat. I suggest reheating in the oven or the air fryer. Keep in mind that they will be their crispiest after they are baked the first time.
- Freeze. These wings will lose some of their crispiness with freezing. If you don’t mind, then you can freeze the chicken wings airtight for up to 2 months. I suggest thawing them overnight in the fridge before putting them back into the oven for about 10-15 minutes to reheat.
