Honey Mustard Baked Chicken Wings

So …. remember that one time that I set off all the fire alarms in the house and couldn’t get them to go off for 30+ minutes!

I do! It was Tuesday!

And it wasn’t enjoyable. Not for one minute.

What was the culprit? These wings!

I know … it makes you want to make them right! Well, before you click out of your browser, listen to the story, read the recipe and then decide for yourself.

Baked chicken wings on a grill rack

It was a day like any other day. Little man and I had gone on a couple of errands and then stopped at the grocery store to pick up some wings to make for daddy. {they are his favorite} As it turned 4 o’clock I started the process of seasoning the wings and putting them in the oven, t-minus 1 hour before we could chow down.

All was well with the world, things were smelling good. Then.. I had to flip them. As I opened the oven door, a smoke cloud flooded into my face. Not a good sign, especially because there were another 25 minutes left. By the time the wings were done the house looked like it has a thin layer of fog, BUT no smoke alarms were going off.

We opened the windows and doors and by the time we sat down to eat these dynamite wings the fog layer had cleared out. HURRAY I can see again!

The evening was wearing down, Mike left to attend an HOA meeting, I was putting little man down, grabbed a glass of wine and my computer. Sat down, turned on the TV and BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP. The crazy thing was there was no smoke in the house, like … none!

For THIRTY minutes ALL of the alarms were going off.

Did you know that they are all intertwined? I didn’t. So if one of the alarms is triggered, they all start to go off which makes it that much harder to find the one that is irritated. I reopened all the windows and doors and rotated to different bedroom doors fanning them in and out in hopes that I would find that ONE alarm and solve the problem.

No dice. By this time (30 minutes later) it was 9pm, our 75 lb. yellow lab was crying and crawling into little man’s closet with her tale between her legs, and little man was in bed with droopy eyes and a self-made cocoon of blankets surrounding his ears saying “mommy its screaming, its screaming”.

Well, to be honest I was about to scream. My sanity was going … quickly! BEEP BEEP BEEP

At last, my in-laws came to the rescue. My father-in-law came through the front door and walked right over to the fire alarms detached them and ahhh.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so happy!

The last time I made wings was these Baked Asian Wings with a Raspberry Hoisin Glaze and they DID NOT turn out with me smoking the house down! So needless to say I was a confused why these Honey Mustard Wings did!

Tips for Making the Best Baked Chicken Wings

After I had some time to think about it, in silence, I realized I put way to much canola oil in when seasoning the chicken wings so I literally cut the amount in half and then some. Presto! Problem solved!

Now, these Tangy Honey Mustard Chicken Wings can be enjoyed … smoke free.

What makes these wings over the top is the seasoning you put on before they bake. The cinnamon combined with the chipotle chili powder will keep your taste buds guessing! The Honey Mustard Sauce is hands down my favorite part of this dish though, I would drink it if I could. This sauce only has four ingredients, but they all combine together like a sweet sympathy of music. The butter is the part that just smooths the honey and mustard combination out.

Mike seriously couldn’t get enough of this sauce, he just kept coming over and dipping his finger in the pot.

If your looking for a killer Wing Recipe to serve at the Superbowl Party, this is it! Don’t order from Wing Stop or Buffalo Wing Wings, they have nothing on this recipe. Believe me!

The BEST sauce ever and only for 4 ingredients, this is a must make! Tangy Honey Mustard Baked Chicken Wings | www.joyfulhealthyeats.com #appetizer #recipes

Honey Mustard Baked Chicken Wings are the perfect appetizer recipe. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside and perfectly saucey!

Chicken Wings:

  • 2 1/23 lbs. of chicken wings (drumettes and wings)
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of chipotle chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of canola oil
  • optional garnish: green onions, sesame seeds

Honey Mustard Sauce:

  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1/2 cup of dijon mustard (I use stone ground mustard because I like the texture of it)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground mustard
  • 2 tablespoons of butter

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Pat chicken wings dry and place in a large bowl.
  3. In a small bowl mix paprika, garlic powder, chipotle chili powder, and ground cinnamon.
  4. Sprinkle seasoning mixture over chicken wings and then add canola oil, toss to coat all the wings.
  5. Add a wire rack to a baking sheet and evenly spread chicken wings out on wire rack.
  6. Bake wings for 20 minutes.
  7. Remove pan from oven, flip the chicken wings and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes.
  8. In the meantime, heat a small pot to medium high heat. Add in mustard, honey, ground mustard, and butter. Stir until butter is melted and sauce is warm.
  9. Add cooked chicken wings to a large bowl with the honey mustard sauce, toss the chicken wings around with the sauce until all the wings are covered.
  10. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.

Okay first of all, these wings…. lordy they look amazing! I totally feel your pain, I had a cake that had a bit of over spill on to the bottom of oven, and my house stunk for days. Nothing worse! But those wings, totally making these over the weekend.

  3. Meg @ The Housewife in Training Files

Girl, that sounds awful. Ha. Sorry had to laugh! But it reminds me one time of when my sister and in law and I were making tacos one night in the oven and set the shells on fire. We freaked and called the 911. Oh gosh. My brother still gives us crap!
But these wings? I have recently fell in love with them so naturally I need to make them!
