Easy Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Tis the season. We are officially shifting from outdoor summer grilling recipes to indoor appliance recipes. Time to wipe off that instant pot, pull the crock pot off the back shelf and get the air fryer basket ready.
I purchased my air fryer last year and have made most the “heavy hitter” recipes y’all recommended to me on Instagram. Today I’m sharing the last item on that list. French Fries. But not just any fries, Sweet Potato Fries. Y’all I can down a huge plate of these by myself. I love sweet potato fries, especially when they are as crispy and delicious as these!
Are Sweet Potato Fries Healthier?
In a way yes! Sweet Potatoes have the same amount of carbohydrates as regular potatoes. But, they are higher in fiber which helps with digestion, Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
What You’ll Need
These fries come together super fast and use minimal ingredients. Mostly just sweet potatoes, oil and a handful of spices and you’ll be set.
- Sweet Potatoes – I like to peel my sweet potatoes to remove the skin. But if you don’t mind it you can leave it on. Totally up to you.
- Oil – My preference is avocado oil. However, you could also use olive oil, canola oil or grape seed oil if that’s what you have.
- Spices – I use a combination of salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder and cinnamon. My surprise ingredient. Don’t knock it till you try it.

Do I Need to Soak the Sweet Potatoes Before Frying?
You don’t have to. But soaking definitely ensures you’ll get crispy fries. Soaking them removes excess starch, rinses off the sugars and ensures they don’t stick to the bottom of the air fryer.
How to Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries
Never made homemade fries before? No worries. It’s way easier than you think. And I guarantee after you’ll be making them from scratch here on out. Here’s how to make your own Air Fryer Sweet Potato Fries.
- Cut Fries – Peel skin from sweet potatoes. Cut into 1/4″ to 1/2″ slices. (see instructions on how to cut fries)
- Soak Fries – This is a critical step and one that most recipes repeat. But it’s the game changer. Soak your sweet potato fries for at least 30 minutes or up to 60 minutes.
- Pat Dry – After soaking fries, pat them try with a paper towel.
- Season Fries – Add fries to a large bowl. Season with avocado oil, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt and optional cinnnamon. Toss to make sure all the fries are evenly coated.
- Air Fry – Heat air fryer to 400°F, allow to heat for 2 minutes. Spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Add seasoned sweet potato fries to air fryer. Do NOT crowd the basket. You don’t want them to touch. This could mean you’ll be doing multiple batches, but doing so will ensure you have the perfect fry. Bake for 10-12 minutes, shaking the air fryer basket or flipping the fries halfway through.
- Serve – Remove from the air fryer and serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Can I Make These in the Oven?
Yes. You can absolutely make in the oven. Follow all the same steps. Then preheat oven to 425°F. Spread sweet potato fries on a greased baking sheet. Baked for 35-40 minutes or until fries are browned and crispy, flipping halfway through.
Tips for Cutting Sweet Potatoes to Make Fries
Here are a few tricks of the trade I’ve learned from cutting my own fries. Sweet Potatoes can be a little hard to cut at times, but if you follow this it will be easy peasy!
- Use a SHARP knife.
- Peel your sweet potato. Then slice a small piece off of one side of the potato to create a stable base for you to cut on. Then, turn sweet potato so the cut side is on the cutting board. This creates a stable way for you to cut and it’s easier to hold the sweet potato.
- Now, slice the sweet potato into 1/4″ to 1/2″ slices lengthwise first. This will leave you with wide and flat slices. Lay those flat on the cutting board. Next, slice into 1/4″ to 1/2″ french fry strips.
Serving Suggestions
So many recipes go with sweet potato fries, that’s one of the best things about them! Here are my top suggestions for what to serve with these crispy fries:

- The Only BBQ Chicken Recipe You’ll Ever Need

How to Store and Reheat Extras
Let your fries come to room temperature, then store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
To reheat, you can place them in the oven on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread them out on a single layer and heat at 350F for about 5 minutes until they are warmed through.
You can also reheat them in the air fryer at 350F for about 2 minutes or until they are warmed through. Keep an eye on them as they will heat up quickly!
