One of my favorite coffee drinks to order at Starbucks is a dirty chai latte. But, living in Texas in the summer months, it’s iced drinks all the way. This is what inspired today’s copycat iced chai tea latte recipe! My homemade drink has spicy, concentrated chai tea topped up with a cold brew espresso and creamy coconut milk. Let me tell you, you’re going to love the flavors in this easy copycat! I’ll show you how to make cold brew from scratch, too. It’s easy peasy.
Reasons You’ll Love This Iced Chai Tea Latte
- Quick and easy to make. Prepare your cold brew overnight, and the next day, simply combine your ingredients into a creamy cold drink.
- Just like Starbucks! Or even better, if you ask me. Making my favorite drinks at home is a budget-friendly option, which I love.
- Adaptable. Customize your homemade chai tea latte with dairy or non-dairy milk, and add your favorite coffee syrups. Making it at home means preparing your latte exactly how you like it!

What Is Chai?
If you’re unfamiliar, chai tea is a blend of black tea, ginger, and warming spices that include cardamom, cinnamon, fennel, black peppercorns, star anise, and cloves. Masala chai is a drink that originates in India, made by combining these spices with black tea brewed in milk and water.
What Is a Starbucks Chai Latte?
The Starbucks chai latte is an adapted version of Masala chai. It’s prepared with a tea concentrate mixed with steamed milk (this can be dairy or non-dairy). If you’d like an extra jolt of caffeine (my answer is always yes), 1-2 shots of coffee or espresso can be added to the chai tea concentrate and milk combo. This is called a “dirty chai latte”. It’s the inspiration behind today’s homemade iced version!

- Cold Brew Coffee – You can buy cold brew ready-made in the stores, but I’ll show you how to make it from coarse-ground coffee.

How to Make an Iced Chai Tea Latte
There are a few ways you can make an iced chai latte from scratch. My method uses a tea concentrate and homemade cold brew. Fun fact: Cold brew is simply regular coffee, brewed cold instead of hot. Second fun fact: Anyone can make it at home using a 1:4 ratio of coffee to water! Let’s get started.

- Make the cold brew. Combine coarse-ground coffee with 4 cups of water in a large pitcher. Stir to mix and let sit overnight. Pour the mixture through a filter to separate the grounds from the concentrated cold brew. Discard the grounds and keep the cold brew in a pitcher.
- Make the chai tea concentrate. Bring 1 1/2 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan. Once boiling, add 4 tea bags and turn the heat off. Let the tea seep for 5 minutes, then remove the tea bags from the hot water.
- Assemble the latte. Allow the tea concentrate to cool. Then, combine it with the cold brew mixture. Pour the tea and coffee mixture over ice with coconut milk and agave, and serve!

Make Ahead Option
Ok, now that you have the recipe, it’s time to get prepping. Everything can be mixed ahead of time if you like, including the coconut milk. Store your mixture in the refrigerator for up to 7 days and serve over ice as you are ready for a smooth cup of deliciousness!
