You don’t need to rent one of those giant frozen margarita machines to make a good frozen marg, and you don’t need to stock up on bottles of neon-colored margarita mix either. You can make your own FRESH frozen margaritas without the artificial colors and flavors, and you can whip them up right in your blender. Which means every Taco Tuesday can also be a Margarita Tuesday! (Especially when you’ve got my Spicy Blackberry Margarita and Blood Orange Margarita Recipe in your rotation too.)

Why Homemade Frozen Margs Are the Way to Go

There’s a lot to love about this frozen margarita recipe!

  • The BEST flavor. All those artificial flavors and colors found in store-bought margarita mix can leave you with a weird aftertaste. When you make your own frozen margaritas, you can use fresh, real ingredients for the best flavor.
  • Customizable sweetness. Add a little more agave nectar to your homemade margarita if you like them sweeter, or go even lighter if you’d like.
  • Endless flavor combinations. With homemade frozen margaritas, the possibilities are endless. Use this recipe as a template to make other flavors (like Frozen Mango Margaritas!) with your favorite frozen fruits.

What You’ll Need

Here’s a quick list of ingredients you’ll need to make the perfect homemade frozen margarita. Scroll down to the recipe card to find the ingredient quantities and recipe instructions.

  • Resposado tequila – Adds a smooth, smoky flavor.
  • Grand Marnier – Triple Sec works as an alternative, but I prefer Grand Marnier.
  • Fresh lime juice – Brings acidity and freshness to the mix, which is essential for a good margarita, so don’t substitute bottled juice!
  • Agave – For sweetness.
  • Ice cubes –This is what makes frozen margaritas thick and frosty!
  • Lime wedges and salt – For garnish.

What Is Resposado Tequila?

Resposado tequila is aged in oak barrels for anywhere from two months to a year. This aging process allows the tequila to develop a more complex flavor profile, balancing the agave with notes of caramel, vanilla, and oak from the barrel. Resposado tequila is smoother and richer than unaged blanco tequila, so I love using it when I’m making frozen margaritas at home.

How to Make a Frozen Margarita in a Blender

Here’s what you’ll need to do.

  • Combine. Add the ice, tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice, and agave to a blender.
  • Blend. Turn on the blender and blend until the mixture is smooth, with no large ice chunks.
  • Serve. Pour into salt-rimmed glasses and serve with a lime wedge.

Frozen Margarita Variations

Here are some ways you can put your own spin on this recipe.

  • Jazz up the salt. Add finely grated lime zest or chili powder to the salt.
  • Use Tajin. You can also swap the salt for Tajin, which has salt in it.
  • Add frozen fruit. Instead of ice cubes, use frozen strawberries or pineapple. Any frozen fruit you like will work for this!
  • Add some spice. For a subtly spicy margarita, I like to use a simple syrup that’s infused with jalapeño slices instead of sweetening with agave, but if you want to skip the step of making the syrup or want more of a kick, you can throw some jalapeño slices into the blender.

What I Like to Serve With Margaritas

If you’ve sought out this recipe, I have a feeling you’ve got some ideas for serving up these frozen margaritas, but I’m going to share some of my personal favorites!

How to Store Leftovers

If you have any leftovers of this frozen margarita recipe (which is doubtful), you can store them in the fridge for a day or two; the ice will melt and you’ll be left with unfrozen margaritas, but they’re still delicious!
