Avocado Turkey Burger Recipe

So you know how fashion bloggers talk about things like “transitional clothing?” Meaning the clothes you wear as summer is winding down but before it’s cool enough for those fall boots. This Avocado Turkey Burger is that in the food department. Consider it a “transitional food” before a full on holiday feast.

Now, let me get something cleared up real fast. Cranberries are not just for the holidays. Oh no friends, although that is when they typically appear the most. But these tart berries can be used in a multitude of ways – some of my favorites are my Cranberry Gin Moscow Mule, my Cranberry Orange Muffins or my Maple Dijon Roasted Butternut Squash Brussel Sprout Salad.

And now, most recently, this Avocado Turkey Burger with Cranberry Chutney. Y’all, this burger is gonna blow your mind. It is bursting with so many flavors that your taste buds won’t even know which direction to go. The best part is, it’s super versatile so you could turn this into a sandwich around the holidays and use up that leftover Thanksgiving Turkey.

Is a Turkey Burger Healthy?

Ground Turkey and Ground Beef both have a good amount of protein in them. However, ground turkey has less saturated fat than beef so it’s a great healthy option.

How much Protein is in a Turkey Burger?

As always, the amount of protein on anything will depend on the serving size. For this recipe, I use a 1/3 lb. burger patty – the amount of protein in this burger is 26 grams. For a 1/4 lb burger, it is 19 grams of protein and for a 1/2 lb turkey burger it is 62 grams of protein.

What you’ll need to make this Turkey Burger Recipe

Like most GOOD burgers, you’ll need a couple of components to make your burger shine in all it’s glory. The Turkey. The Smashed Avocado. The Cranberry Chutney. Here’s what you’ll need to make these burgers:

Avocado Turkey Burger

  • Ground Turkey – I like to use 85/15 ratio. Turkey is already lean, so to keep them juicy and flavorful you’ll need all the fat you can get. However, you could use the 93/7 if you’d like. Just keep an eye on it so it doesn’t dry out.
  • Avocado – Adds a creaminess to the burger, just smash it up and use it almost like a mayo.
  • Arugula – Just a handful of this spicy lettuce will do.
  • Fontina Cheese – You can find this buttery cheese at the deli. Not only is it nutty and creamy, but it melts like a dream.
  • Bun – Use your favorite bun here

Cranberry Chutney

  • Cranberries – You can use fresh or frozen for this recipe. Most of the time
  • Orange Juice – Cranberries and Orange make the perfect compliment, the orange juice adds sweetness, citrus and the liquid you need to cook the cranberries up.
  • Orange Zest – I love to add zest to enhance the orange flavor.
  • Maple Syrup – This will help counteract the tartness of the cranberries. So, if the chutney is too tart for you, just add a little more maple. Please note: Use the real thing here, not the buttery version. It will completely change the flavor of this chutney so PLEASE stick with real maple syrup.

How to tell if burger is done?

The best and most accurate way to tell if your turkey burger is done is to use a meat thermometer. Here’s my favorite brand. Turkey is done when the internal temperature reaches 165°F.
