Oven Roasted Brussel Sprouts

The past couple of weeks I have been attending this women’s bible study at our church. To be honest, in the past I have kinda avoided those settings because it always seemed “clicky” to me, everyone stuck to “their own crowd” and that was that. So if you didn’t have a “posse” then you felt left out. But the study description this go around is what drew me in:

“God’s faithfulness in the midst of our UNfaithfulness.”

BOOM! Hammer… nailed it!

The study was on the book of Hosea and I had no idea what God had in store for me.

For those of you who don’t know, the book of a Hosea is about a prophet who was told by God to marry this girl, Gomer. Hosea was also told that he would love Gomer but she would be unfaithful to him and that eventually she would become a street prostitute. Everything was fine, Hosea had three children with Gomer and right after that Gomer started to do just what was said of her, she became unfaithful and a street prostitute. Hosea loved her despite it and tried to help her to see what she was doing was not good for herself. At one time in the book, Hosea had to go to Gomers “owners” house, pay for his OWN wife so that she could come back to his home and live in safety. This story while sad is a story of grace, mercy, and relentless love in the face of unfaithfulness.

So far we are only 4 weeks into the study and have gotten through the first six chapters of Hosea. It has been great, God has been working on my heart BIG time! Here are a couple of things that I have been mulling over.

“The enemy (satan) says, you are without, you need. God says, you HAVE, you just need to receive”

This is a BIG lie that we tend to believe. You don’t have enough – buy a bigger house, a better car, more “stuff.” You’re not good enough – feelings of shame and unworthiness sneak in, affect your relationships and how you interact with other people. Not pretty enough? Change the way you look, strive after what society says is beautiful. He/She doesn’t love you enough – look for love in other places. The list could go on and the heartache continues. When all we need to do is turn to God who says, “I will give you what you need, you just need to receive those things from me in my timing. Open your arms!”

“The places where we are most broken are the places where hope and healing begin.”

This has been a big one for me. I have been holding onto a lot of anger and unforgiveness towards a person. The idea of “letting them off the hook” or not “helping them realize where they are wrong” makes my stomach churn. Everything in me wants to just chew them out because they deserve it and it’s what they’ve had coming for a while. But … yes that but! That unforgiveness is a place where my heart is broken and needs healing. I need to be able to forgive that person and love them despite the hurt they have caused. The unforgiveness I have needs hope and healing!

“When we feel threatened we trade our identity for something we are not and only find emptiness.”

This is a big one for women. When we as women start to feel threatened … aka she is a better mom, she does so much stuff for her family, she’s gorgeous, she has so many friends, her business is thriving and mine is not … we start to trade the identity God has given us trying to pursue what we THINK we NEED to pursue.

TO PUT IT SIMPLY.

My identity is “beloved daughter” and “international food blogger.” If I {krista} allow myself to believe that God does not love me because he doesn’t give me what I “want” I trade my identity and believe that I am no longer “beloved.” If I allow myself to think that other bloggers have better blogs, that they are reaching more people and I will never get to where they are at. I start to trade my identity and believe that maybe international food blogger is NOT the identity God has given me and start to become discouraged or even give up. All of those thoughts only leave me with emptiness, while the identity God has given me leaves me with life! Get it?

Don’t trade your identity for something else when you feel threatened, stand in the face of the trial and fight for what God has given you. Don’t hand it over!

Now here’s the best part. You can even make these ahead of time FREEZE them for later!
