Anyone else out there always lick the bowl after making a batch or brownies? Or better yet, intentionally leave extra batter in the bowl to eat it later? I know I’m guilty! I just love anything chocolate and if there’s a little bit left over, of course I’m going to eat it. Duh!

Can I eat raw brownie batter?

Well, honestly it depends on if the batter has raw egg or not and the uncooked flour! If your brownie batter has either of these in it (and most likely it does) then no, I’d recommend not eating it raw. Today’s recipe is a made from chickpeas and meant to be eaten raw. Woohoo!

Can you get sick from eating brownie batter?

Yes, normally you would get sick from eating too much brownie batter. Regular brownie batter is not meant to be eaten raw, especially with raw egg and uncooked flour so eating too much of it will upset your stomach and could cause sickness. However, this edible brownie batter IS meant to be eaten raw and will not make you sick. So if you are a raw brownie batter eater, here’s a safe way to eat it! Trust me, this will be your jam!

Ingredients for Vegan Brownie Batter:

  • Chickpeas – drained, rinsed and some skins removed (see directions in recipe card below)
  • Almond Butter – you could use peanut butter if you want, but I find the batter has a stronger peanut butter taste with the peanut butter
  • Maple Syrup – a natural way to sweeten these gluten free brownies
  • Vanilla Extract – to give that hint of vanilla
  • Cacao Powder – it is brownie, so we need to add chocolate people
  • Chocolate Chips – everything is better with more chocolate, adding the chocolate chips just gives it that extra chocolate-y taste
  • Cinnamon – you can omit this if you like, I just like hint of cinnamon and it helps curb appetite

How do you make Edible Brownie Batter?

This edible gluten free brownie batter is made without flour or brownie mix. The base ingredient are chickpeas and nut butter.

  1. Drain and rinse chickpeas. Place in a paper towel, dry off. If some of the skins start to come off peel them off and discard. (this will help the cookie dough not be as gritty)
  2. Add chickpeas, almond butter, vanilla extract, maple syrup, cacao powder and cinnamon to a food processor. Blend until smooth and creamy. Blend until everything is combined.
  3. Add chickpea cookie dough mixture to a small bowl. Fold in the chocolate chips.
  4. Serve immediately.
  5. *** Can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. ***

Ok, once you have your edible batter made you are ready to dive in. No wait time necessary. Just go for it! When it comes to storing your gluten free brownie dough, I’d recommend putting it in an air tight container and keeping it in the refrigerator. This dough is best if used within 3 to 4 days, otherwise the chocolate chips start to soften a little bit and don’t keep their crunch.

Now, just a reminder this IS made with chickpeas so the texture is going to be thicker than normal brownie batter. If you’re looking for something that has that rich chocolate brownie taste but in a healthy way, this is it!
