An Easy Cobb Salad Recipe

Don’t worry, I saved the best for last! After all, what can get better than bacon + avocado in a salad? Am I right?

Cobb Salad is a classic salad, and usually the one I order when we go out to a restaurant. It’s my go to at Chick-fil-a! So, I figured why not make this classic at home, stuff it in a mason jar and make it a little lighter than the ones you get a a restaurant. Genius idea!

Before, we get started I just wanted to say. Thank you for following along with me this week for #JHESaladWeek! I hope you’ve loved every Mason Jar Salad Recipe I’ve thrown at you and are planning to make a few. I know I’ve enjoyed creating them … and eating them!  Ok, let’s get started!

What is a Cobb Salad?

The Cobb Salad is an American based dish, that is usually viewed as a garden salad. Typically it is filled with chopped greens (think romaine, iceberg lettuce, watercress or even endive), chopped tomato, crispy bacon, hardboiled eggs, avocado, chives and then topped with cooked chicken or sliced ham. Sometimes people will also add cheese to it as well.

In order to make this easy cobb salad recipe you’ll only need a handful of simple ingredients:

How to Make Cobb Salad

  1. Prepare Chicken: You have a couple of options here. You could buy already cooked Rotisserie Chicken (which is what I do) and shred it. You could cook your own, I recommend either roasting, grilling or pan searing it – just make sure you keep the seasoning to salt & pepper.
  2. Cook Hard boiled Eggs: for hard boiled eggs I fill a small saucepan up with 1″ of water. Place the eggs in your pot and cover. Turn the heat up to medium high heat. Bring water to a boil and then let boil for 10 minutes. Remove eggs from heat and place in an ice water bath for 2 minutes, then peel. I usually give mine a rough chop.
  3. Chop up Vegetables: Having all of your ingredients ready and chopped up ahead of time, including the lettuce, will create a smooth assembly process later on.
  4. Make Your Dressing: A red wine vinaigrette is actually traditional for Cobb Salad, but in today’s recipe I made a light Ranch Dressing with a greek yogurt base that I think you’re going to love!

What is the Difference Between a Chef Salad and a Cobb Salad?

Honestly, they are almost the same. The main difference is that a Cobb Salad has a mixture of lettuce, avocado and tomato on it and a Chef Salad does not.

Are Cobb Salads Good For You?

Sometimes, I think this is a loaded question. Anything can be healthy for you, in moderation. Now, if you go to a restaurant I would say that most likely a Cobb Salad will not be healthy for you. Why? Because their portion controls are off. Restaurants tend to load up the salad so you can barely see the greens – meaning it’s piles of bacon, egg, and avocado which are all fattier foods. So if you’re on keto your good, if you’re not I’d say don’t eat everything on that plate. However, this Mason Jar Chicken Cobb Salad does a good job of giving you the flavors but not overloading the fat.

How Long Will Mason Jar Salads last?

If you store this Mason Jar Salad in an air tight container (which it should be in already), then it will last for 4-5 days in the refrigerator. Any longer than that the vegetables might start to lose their crispness.

I cannot wait for you guys to try this one. Hands down this Cobb Salad it is #1 in my book, probably because Cobb Salads are one of my favorite salads AND because it has avocado, bacon and a killer yogurt based ranch dressing that I think you’re going to love!
