Why I Love This Apple Bread Recipe
If you love sweet loaves and spiced apple desserts, this freshly-baked apple bread recipe is for you.
- Better than the bakery. You can add juicy peaches, chewy cranberries, or turn this recipe into muffins.
- Great for fall. There are fresh apples, crunchy pecans, and three kinds of warm spices in every bite.
- Homemade. There’s nothing like a homemade sweet loaf with your favorite coffee.
- Freezer-friendly. Pop it out of the freezer whenever you’re craving a sweetly spiced dessert.
Ingredient Notes
Cinnamon, earthy allspice, spicy cloves, and sweet vanilla will make your kitchen smell heavenly once this bread’s in the oven. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact amounts.
- All purpose flour – 00 flour works too.
- Baking powder – Check the expiration date before you add it in.
- Baking soda – Sieve it if it has any large clumps.
- Salt – Kosher salt is best.
- Cinnamon – You can swap all the spices for 3 teaspoons apple pie spice if you prefer.
- Allspice – Ground nutmeg can be used as well.
- Ground cloves – Feel free to skip it if you don’t like
- Eggs – Liquid eggs work great for this.
- Coconut oil – Go for vegetable, corn, or canola oil if you prefer.
- Applesauce – You can also make your own by blending 1 small apple (peeled and cored) with 1/2 cup water until smooth.
- Vanilla extract – Feel free to use almond extract.
- Sugar – Granulated or light brown sugar are best.
- Apples – Make sure they’re peeled and cored.
- Pecans – Walnuts are a good swap.
What Kind of Apples Are Best For Bread?
Granny Smith apples are best for bread baking because of their subtle tartness and firm texture. This means they hold their shape well in the oven. However, Royal Gala, Pink Lady, and Fuji apples are great as well.
How to Make Apple Bread
It’s almost like making a box mix cake, except this spiced apple bread is made with real, wholesome ingredients. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the full recipe card.
- Prep the oven. Preheat it to 350F. Grease an 8×4″ loaf pan with cooking spray. Set it aside.
- Prep the apples. Gently toss the apples in a bowl with 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon.
- Whisk the dry ingredients. Mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, allspice, cloves, and remaining cinnamon in a separate bowl.
- Make the wet mixture. Use a stand-mixer to beat the eggs until smooth. Pour in the oil, applesauce, and vanilla extract. Continue mixing until well combined. Mix in the sugar.
- Fold them. Slowly fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture. Mix until just-combined. Stir in the cinnamon-apples and pecans.
- Bake. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Cool it. Remove it from the oven. Let it cool for 10-15 minutes before removing it from the pan. Set it on a wire rack to finish cooling completely. Slice and enjoy!
Tips & Variation Ideas
Adding velvety icing, chewy cranberries, and crunchy coconut to this homemade apple bread recipe takes it to the next level.
- Prevent sticking. Line the bottom and sides of the loaf pan with parchment paper to prevent any sticking.
- Make it fruitier. Instead of 1 1/2 cups apples, use 3/4 cup apples and 3/4 cup diced peaches or apricots for some extra sweetness.
- More add-ins. Stir 1/4-1/2 cup dried cranberries, shredded coconut, or raisins into the batter for more flavor and texture.
- Make muffins. Line a muffin tray with liners. Pour batter into them until 3/4s full. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Add icing. Whisk 1/2 cup powdered sugar with 4 teaspoons lemon juice until smooth. Spread the mixture over the cooled loaf for a sweeter bite. You can also use frosting or Cool Whip for this.
- Stay in the center. Never bake on the lowest oven rack. The bottom of the loaf will burn before the center’s had a chance to cook through. Always bake in the middle rack.
How to Store Apple Bread
If you make 2 loaves, you can always keep one on hand for a last-minute dessert.
- Counter: Place it in a paper bag for up to 3 days. This method isn’t recommended if you live in a high-humidity area.
- Fridge: Store it in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Let it come down to room temperature for 5 minutes before digging in.
- Freezer: Wrap it whole, sliced, or in chunks with plastic wrap. Transfer it to a freezer bag. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge or on the counter for 20 minutes.

Girl.. I am dying for the fall to come… houston is like a sauna in the summer! Plus, I’m a sucker for all things fall; the decorations, the food, the weather, and football season! 🙂 hehe
Btw I loved reading your “about” page. It is nice to meet a sister in Christ. My husband and I are 5 years apart and he knew me since I was 9 (his sister was my first English tutor)..If I think about that, it’s kind of neat and disturbing haha. Your family is so adorable!
Thank you so much, kinda cool we have similar beliefs, we are both 5 years apart from our husbands, we knew their sisters before them, and we both have super cute families! 🙂 Loved the first pic on your about page… adorable!
Yum! This looks fantastic, Krista! For someone who’s never made apple bread before, this sure looks perfect ;). Love all your photos as well! Love your site and look forward to following you.
Your so sweet, thank you! I was a little nervous how it would taste, but it was amazing! The photos were just fun to take. 🙂 Look forward to following you too!
luscious looking bread…your first attempt and so awesome, would bake it soon 🙂
Thanks so much! My husband is already asking for a repeat of this bread. It was gone in 2 days!
I’ve never made apple bread before either but this look delicious! Sounds easy enough too. I love making muffins on the weekend and then individually wrap and freeze them to have on the go during the work week.
It was super easy! I totally need to do that next time I make muffins, what a great idea! 🙂 Thanks for stopping by Tina!
Looks delicious! We all love apple and cinnamon baked goods, so I’m sure it would be a huge hit!
We do it! Probably our all time favorite… I hope you and the fam love it! 🙂
YUM- I’m always looking for new things to make the kids for breakfast. Thanks Krista.
These are great! And to be honest… you could probably even reduce the sugar to 1/2 cup because the spices make up for the sweetness. (I know you are trying to make things healthy for those kiddos)
