An Easy Make Ahead Breakfast
Oatmeal in general is one of my favorite breakfasts. It’s quick, easy, and healthy. Oats are full of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and all sorts of things that help start the day off right. But overnight oats? Overnight oats are my absolute favorite.
They require just a few minutes of prep the night before (or a few nights before) and no work in the morning. Just pull them from the fridge and dig in! They are the definition of a “lazy breakfast” but I’m still filling up on fiber and protein to keep me full til lunch. Not to mention the many ways to customize them so I never get bored.
These Chocolate Peanut Butter Overnight Oats are my new favorite. They combine creamy peanut butter with cocoa powder for the perfect ratio of chocolate to peanut butter, plus the peanut butter adds extra protein. Half a banana and a dash of cinnamon and these overnight oats are out of this world.
What Are Overnight Oats?
Overnight oats are basically magic. They are oatmeal that requires 0 cooking, baking, or even microwaving and are customizable to whatever flavors and toppings you like. Instead of cooking in liquid, overnight oats sit in a liquid (like milk or nut milk) overnight, which softens them. By morning, you have soft, creamy oatmeal ready to go!
What You’ll Need
This easy overnight oats recipe requires just 7 easy ingredients.
- Banana – Use a banana that is ripe but without too many brown spots.
- Rolled oats – Use old-fashioned rolled oats, not quick oats or steel cut oats.
- Peanut butter – Any brand of peanut butter or even homemade peanut butter will work.
- Cocoa powder – Adds the chocolate flavor to the oats.
- Chia seeds – Chia adds lots of fiber to the dish.
- Cinnamon – For a hint of warmth.
- Unsweetened almond milk – You can also use whatever variety of nut milk you prefer, just keeping in mind that it will change the flavor.
What Are The Best Oats for Overnight Oats?
Old-fashioned rolled oats are the best option for overnight oats. Quick oats will absorb the liquid too quickly and become mushy while steel-cut oats will not soften enough. Rolled oats, on the other hand, absorb the milk for a perfectly creamy but not mushy texture.
How to Make Chocolate Peanut Butter Overnight Oats
Overnight oats are one of my favorite easy breakfast recipes because they require less than 5 minutes of prep.
- Combine all ingredients. Stir all ingredients together in a mason jar (or other bowl) until combined. Cover.
- Refrigerate. Refrigerate overnight.
- Serve. Stir and serve cold or warm in the microwave.

Variations & Mix-Ins
The sky is the limit when it comes to making overnight oats. Once you get the basics down, you can swap out any flavors and ingredients as desired. If chocolate peanut butter isn’t your thing, you can try plain ol’ creamy peanut butter overnight oats or almond vanilla overnight oats.
You can also customize your chocolate peanut butter overnight oats by adding some toppings in the morning before serving. Here are a few ideas:
- Banana slices
- Fresh berries (like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries)
- Nuts (almonds, pecans, etc)
- Seeds (pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, etc)
- Honey
- Chocolate chips or cacao nibs
- Shredded coconut
Should Overnight Oats Be Served Hot or Cold?
It’s up to you! Overnight oats can be enjoyed straight from the fridge or you can pop them into the microwave for 30 to 60 seconds if you prefer a more traditional hot oatmeal for breakfast.
How Long Will These Last?
Overnight oats are great for meal prep because they will last for up to 5 days. You can prepare them on Sunday night to enjoy through the entire week! Overnight oats must chill for a minimum of 6 hours, though 12 hours/overnight is better (hence the name!). That said, while overnight oats will last for up to 5 days, I prefer to eat mine within 3 days, as the oats do get softer the longer they sit.

- 1/2 banana, mashed
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 2 tablespoons peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons chia seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup + 2 tablespoons of unsweetened almond milk
Instructions
- To a mason jar, add all ingredients. Stir until combined and cover.
- Let sit overnight in the refrigerator.
- Serve cold or slightly warm in the microwave.
