Recently I kinda had my world flipped upside down so I wanted to share my findings with you!
I have always lived a healthy lifestyle. I work out 4-5 times a week. Eat healthy 80% of the time, take my vitamins and in general make wise decisions to take care of my body as well as my family’s. I thought doing those things would be enough. That I would be way ahead of the curve. I mean, after all I write a blog about eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle.
I definitely don’t claim to know it all. So when a friend of mine asked to meet with me, I happily said yes. (Plus who turns down a chance to be childless for a couple of hours!) My friend Emilie has been an Esthetician for years and has always been extremely conscious of what goes into and onto her body. So when she, a skin specialist and health fanatic, told me about the beauty products she just switched to and WHY; I valued what she had to say.
Like many people, I assumed that we lived in a highly regulated country, so the products I was using must be safe. I honestly, never even questioned the safety of my shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, or foundation at all. Why should I? Why would the government allow us to use unsafe products. Right? I was so surprised when I finally learned that when it comes to the personal care industry, there are very minimal regulations. And these are things that we use on our skin and get absorbed into our bloodstream on a daily basis!
Did you know that the last time a law was passed on regulations for chemicals in personal care products was 1938. I know right!?! Absolutely shocking! Europe has a list of 1,400 chemicals that are banned or restricted in personal care products while the United States has a whopping 30 that are restricted to date. That seriously blows my mind!
Ya’ll what are we putting on our skin and how does that affect us? Since the start of the industry 80,000 chemicals have been introduced into the US and only 200 have been tested for safety! But they are still being used. The side affects of these chemicals, that we DAILY put on our skin can cause infertility, cancer, eczema, skin irritation, allergies, and so much more!
We can’t control a lot of things in life. But we if we can control what goes onto and into our bodies, why wouldn’t we?
I went home and started doing some research. I looked up the products that I currently use on a website called the ewg.com (environmental working group), the actually have a free app too called “skindeep.” This website is completely dedicated to informing consumers about the ingredients and safety of products they use on a daily basis. But here’s the kicker, you can type in any product that you use and it will give that product a rating (either 1-10 or A-F) and list the concerns of that product as well as the side effects it can cause.
To be honest, for a while I felt stupid that I didn’t know this stuff before. But now I feel like my eyes have been opened. And now I’m on a mission to rid my house of toxins and chemicals one step at a time. I’ve been using the EWG to buy products that are safe for my house … laundry detergents, cleaning products, hand soaps, you name it you got it. If it touches my families skin, it needs to be evaluated. Then, and this switch was easy, I made the switch to BeautyCounter products for my family. Now I can wash my hair or more importantly my sons hair, worry free. I’m not putting anything on his skin that is going to cause harm later! And THAT is priceless!
