The Best Air Fryer Brussel Sprouts

Y’all I finally hopped on the bandwagon and bought my first Air Fryer! Do you have one?

I feel like I’m always the last one to jump onto these things, but once I do I’m hooked and get all the hype. The very first thing I made was Salmon and absolutely was head over heals for it.. don’t worry that recipe is coming next month. And yes, I’m going to make you wait because right now we are in full blown holiday mode.

I feel like I’ve got you covered on the entree part for thanksgiving with my Moist Thanksgiving Turkey Recipe made with no brine (oh and I have easy to follow video and step by step photos so you CAN’T mess it up). So now I’m making it my personal mission to pump out all the side dishes I can think of! Last week we had Creamy Mashed Potatoes (the classic version) and an Epic Cornbread Sausage Stuffing that I’m straight up addicted too. Today, we’re talking Garlic Parmesan Brussel Sprouts made in the air fryer because we’re getting our “crisp” on!

What You’ll Need

  • Brussel Sprouts: These are kinda key for the recipe, wink wink, just make sure you have them trimmed and halved.
  • Olive Oil: The olive oil coat the brussel sprouts and helps make them caramelize.
  • Garlic Powder: I’ve tried this recipe with minced garlic and garlic powder. I found that the minced garlic burnt a little bit and gave the sprouts more of bitter taste so garlic powder is definitely the way to go.
  • Parmesan Cheese: I used shredded parmesan cheese in this recipe, however I’ve also used grated parmesan. Both work great.

How to Trim Brussels Sprouts

It doesn’t take much time, but prepping your brussel sprouts the right way is key to having crispy sprout goodness.

  1. First, slice off the bottom end of each Brussels sprout. If you see any wilted or discolored leaves, discard those as well.
  2. Next, slice each Brussels sprout vertically to create two halves.

How to Cook Brussel Sprouts in the Air Fryer

Every body loves a good crispy caramelized brussel sprout. When they are cooked right they are like vegetable candy! Here’s how to make them:

  1. Heat an air fryer to 400ºF.
  2. Add trimmed brussel sprouts to a medium bowl, with olive oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Toss to coat.
  3. Add the Brussels sprouts to the air fryer and shake so they are in a single layer. Air fry for 6 minutes.
  4. Remove basket, shake the brussels sprouts to move them around and then shake them back into a single layer.
  5. Top with parmesan cheese. Air fry an additional 6 minutes.
  6. Remove sprouts from the air fryer and serve.

How Long Do They Need to Cook?

There are a couple options when it comes to cooking your brussel sprouts. I like to cook mine at 400°F for 10 to 12 minutes, shaking them halfway through. I’ve heard other people cook them at 375°F for 15 minutes, shaking halfway through. I honestly think it depends on how big your brussel sprouts are and how crispy you like them. Test out a few times till you get the texture that makes you swoon!

Can I Use Frozen Brussel Sprouts?

If you like crispy brussel sprouts, I would NOT recommend starting with frozen brussel sprouts and honestly even thawed brussel sprouts. Fresh is always best! The seasoning tend to adhere to fresh sprouts better and they definitely crisp up and caramelize better. Frozen or thawed tend to be a little bit more “water logged.”

Tips for Success

  • Size matters. Consistency in cuts or size does matter. Having similar sizes will ensure that all of your sprouts are cooked evenly.
  • Single Layer is Key. Make sure that your brussel sprouts are in a single layer and not too crowded in the basket. If they are too packed in there the air will not circulate around them causing them not to crisp up.
  • Set a timer. I don’t know about you, but I  definitely can forget that I need to flip something and by the time I remember it’s too late. Make sure you set a timer, that way you won’t forget to shake the basket halfway through the cooking process.
  • Batch Cooking. If you’re making a double batch of this recipe, which of course I recommend you do. Pay attention to that second batch, the air fryer will already be hot so the second batch may not take as long as the first.
